ARM4HanD2023 — Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality Applications for Handheld Devices.

Call for Participation

Current handheld displays, such as smartphones and tablets, can provide a wide and low budget access to augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) applications. However, current research in this area faces many challenges, e.g., suitable interaction techniques, better user experience, navigation in MR environments, etc. These challenges limited the usage of AR/MR application in real world activities. Targeting these challenges, the ARM4HandD2023 workshop will provide a platform for researchers, developers, and professionals to discuss issues and defining novel methods and approaches suitable for developing new interaction paradigms, user interfaces, 3D visualizations, and application for AR/MR in handheld display devices.

ARM4HandD2023 will be a full-day workshop held in conjunction with INTERACT 2023. The workshop will take place in York, UK, and online (depending on its participants, it will be hybrid or online only)

Important Dates

Submission deadline: Wednesday, May 24, 2023 (extended abstracts)
Notification of acceptance: Wednesday, June 7, 2023
Camera-ready submission: TBA (extended abstracts)
ARM4HandD2023 Workshop: Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Submission Guidelines

The intended audience of the workshop is a mix of industrial and academic participants. We expect between 15 and 20 active participants.

Papers are solicited in the following categories

  • Research papers (technical solutions and empirical studies)
  • Practice papers (experience reports and problem statements)
  • Tool demonstration papers
  • Case studies and best practices

The extended abstract submissions must be written in English and conform to the Springer Template instructions (using the INTERACT paper submission Springer template - https://interact2023.org/submissions/0/). Submissions must be in PDF format and submitted electronically via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=arm4hand2023). All papers submitted to the workshop must be unpublished original work and must not have been submitted elsewhere for publication. The organizers and an external program committee will review the submitted papers. The submissions will be reviewed based on workshop relevance, academic rigor, innovation, industrial applicability, and quality of writing. Accepted papers will be included in the INTERACT 2023 Workshop Proceedings and will be available online.

In addition, we plan to apply for a special issue in a journal that addresses the workshop topic. Here, full papers (between 8 to 12 pages long) and short/position/vision papers (between 4 to 6 pages long using the Springer Template) will be accepted. Selected abstracts from the workshops will be invited to publish an extended paper version in this special issue.

Note: At least one of the authors of each accepted paper is required to register for the workshop.

Expected Outcomes

The workshop will be held as a full-day workshop  It will consist of four 1.5 hours tracks. The conference will start with a keynote presentation to set the stage for the workshop, introducing challenges and progress towards AR/MR for handheld devices. After that, the workshop will feature paper presentations and interactive session(s).

Each accepted paper will feature a shor  presentation (e.g. 8 minutes length) and will be followed by a discussant who will put the paper into a scientific perspective, list contributions, and raise issues and questions for discussions (10 minutes for discussant and open discussion). The last two sessions of workshop will be used for interactive exercises through an interactive group discussion strategy. We found this a very productive activity in our previous workshops for discussing and highlighting the challenges in the workshop theme’s areas.
